I had just started teaching at Whole Yoga, maybe I had taught 3 classes when I saw Karyn Karlson, the founder of Whole Yoga, at a community dinner at Eldorado Mt. Yoga Ashram. That was where she asked me, “Satya, do you want to purchase Whole Yoga?” I was surprised and didn’t see this coming but my heart jumped up and down – “Yes, yes, say yes!”
The rest is history!
That was back in 2004, yoga was just starting to become popular, well, popular again anyway. It was around 2004/2005 when yoga studios started popping up here, there and everywhere, in Denver. Karyn had a full time corporate job and didn’t feel it was possible to market the studio to keep up with the growing competition. Vajra, my husband, and I didn’t know much about marketing either, however, we were an awesome team at training yoga teachers to teach hatha yoga.
With Vajra’s anatomy background, being a physical therapist and certified yoga teacher, and my adoration for teaching yoga asana, we offered the first yoga teacher training at Whole Yoga and we grew us a community! Oh, and we had a baby too! Two months after we bought Whole Yoga, we got pregnant, so yes, it’s a yoga family! We gave birth to our beloved daughter, Jaya Hanalei, whose first words were, “Hello, Whole Yoga, how may I help you?”
Karyn still teaches the same yoga and meditation class she started teaching back in 2000 when she first opened the studio. That class is now the heart of the Whole Yoga community. Nowadays, the teachers that Vajra and I trained are seasoned practitioners and we think they’re the most wholehearted yoga instructors in the Denver metro area. They’ve become amazing leaders in our yoga community and they’re now instructing the teacher trainings.
The Whole Yoga hatha yoga teacher training program has never been better! We’ve grown and evolved with Whole Yoga as our home base. Our students feel that same homeyness and they settle in with us and we breathe, move and sit quietly, together. We always keep it simple and we continually become the small village that keeps Whole Yoga a humble, neighborhood, yoga studio.
